The 2025/26 season in the Hungarian football championship has come to an end. Gyor became champions after collecting 69 points and finishing just one point ahead of Ferencvaros. For the club from Gyor, this was the fifth league title in their history and their first in the last 13 years.
The results of the season are particularly interesting from an Armenian perspective. In recent years, Armenian clubs have regularly faced Hungarian teams in European competitions: last season, an Armenian club played against Ferencvaros in the Champions League and against Gyor in the Conference League.
Now it is Gyor who will represent Hungary in the Champions League qualifying rounds. Ferencvaros, where Armenia national team forward Edgar Sevikyan is expected to return in the summer, will play in the Europa League. Hungary will be represented in the Conference League by Paks and Debrecen. In the final standings, Paks and Debrecen both finished with 53 points, taking third and fourth place respectively.
Harutyunyan’s Puskas Akademia finish sixth
Puskas Akademia, the team of Armenia national team defender Georgi Harutyunyan, finished the championship in sixth place. The club collected 46 points in 33 matches and failed to qualify for European competition.
Harutyunyan himself had a mixed but generally useful second season at the club. At the beginning of the campaign, the 21-year-old defender had problems with playing time: the team was adapting to new squad-limit conditions and trying different line-up options, which meant the Armenian footballer did not always get a stable place on the pitch.
However, as the season progressed, Harutyunyan managed to prove his value in several positions. In the first part of the championship, he more often played in midfield and occasionally covered the left side of defence, while in the second half of the season he was used mainly as a centre-back.
In total, Georgi played 24 of a possible 33 matches, started 14 times, and completed the full 90 minutes in 12 games. In the final five matches of the season, Harutyunyan was consistently named in the starting line-up and played without being substituted.
According to SofaScore, Harutyunyan’s average rating was 6.71, with the team average standing at 6.73. He recorded one assist, created two big chances and missed one clear chance. With the Armenian defender on the pitch, Puskas Akademia kept three clean sheets.
On average per match, Harutyunyan made 1 interception, 1.4 tackles, 4 clearances and won 54% of his duels. These numbers reflect his role well in the second part of the season: Georgi gradually became a more important player in the team’s defensive line.
Harutyunyan’s contract with the club runs for another two years — until the summer of 2028.
Aroyan’s former club relegated
It was an unsuccessful season for Kazincbarcika, the former club of Armenia national team defender Varazdat Haroyan. The team finished last in the Hungarian championship and was relegated to the second division. Haroyan himself left the club during the season, in November. Diosgyor were also relegated from the top flight.
