On January 17, the 2026 European Figure Skating Championships came to an end. The tournament became the final major stage of preparation for athletes ahead of the 2026 Winter Olympic Games, which will begin on February 6 in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
The triumph of the championships belonged to the Georgian national team, which won two sets of gold medals for the first time in its history. Twenty-three-year-old Nika Egadze stepped onto the podium of the European Championships for the first time in his career and immediately claimed the title, confidently winning both the short program and the free skate.
Another gold medal and two small golds were secured for Georgia by the pair Anastasia Metelkina / Luka Berulava, who left no chance for their rivals. Georgia could have counted on even more medals: Anastasia Gubanova won silver in the free skate, but finished fifth overall based on the total score. The Georgian ice dance duo ended the championship in sixth place.
The remaining two gold medal sets were claimed by representatives of Estonia and France.
The Russian national team did not participate in the championships; however, several skaters born and raised in Russia won medals while representing other countries. Georgy Reshtenko earned bronze as part of the Czech team, Anastasia Metelkina won gold in pairs skating with the Georgian team, Nikita Volodin became a silver medalist in pairs for Germany, and the pair Maria Pavlova / Alexey Svyatchenko, competing for Hungary and consisting entirely of Russian athletes, won bronze.
It should also be noted that Armenian skaters — the pair Karina Akopova / Nikita Rakhmanin, as well as singles skater Semyon Danilyants — were unable to participate in the championships due to visa issues.
