The Best Armenian MMA Fighters of All Time
Armenian sport has enjoyed a boom time recently. Domestic and national teams have represented the country at the highest level, and the diaspora continues to proudly compete in the name of their homeland. Football is one of the most visible international sports arenas, but Armenia has also always been well represented in fighting sports.
Boxing used to be the undisputed number one fight sport, but in recent times, mixed martial arts has taken over that mantel. With a rich history of wrestling, Armenians have taken to MMA in their droves, with many competing at the top level and featuring in the best UFC online betting markets.
For a relatively young sport, MMA has quite a history of Armenian fighters, and it is not just the modern-day stars that are celebrated by fans inside the country and among the diaspora. Here are five MMA fighters we think have flown the flag for Armenia and spread the word of Armenian sport better than most.
Arman Tsarukyan
Currently ranked the 15th best pound-for-pound fighter in the whole of the UFC, Arman Tsarukyan is the number one contender in the lightweight division after also fighting in the featherweight class at points of his career. Born to an Armenian family living on the Georgian side of the border, Tsarukyan is one of the biggest stars of Armenian sport at the current time and is known for his grappling and striking talent.
As a youngster, Tsarukyan harbored dreams of playing hockey in the NHL, but made his professional MMA debut in 2015 and has not looked back since. After winning 13 of his first 14 fights, he was approached by the UFC, where he has fought some of the best in the sport. He beat Charles Oliveira in the lightweight title eliminator in 2024 and will surely be fighting for a title in the very near future.
Karo Parisyan
Armenia has a proud fighting tradition in a range of disciplines, and it is arguably only because of the history and pioneers like Karo Parisyan that a fighter like Arman Tsarukyan is where he is today. Parisyan was born in Yerevan in 1982 but moved to the US with his family when he was just a child. He took up judo when he was nine and moved to mixed martial arts a little later on.
Parisyan began his professional MMA career in 1999 and soon grew a reputation for his submission skills. Just four years later, he was taken under the UFC banner, although he did take time out to claim the WEC welterweight title before returning to the most prestigious MMA organization in the world. Parisyan ended his relationship with UFC in 2010, but did go on to fight for other promotions before retiring with a 24-12-1 record in 2017.
Manny Gamburyan
A cousin of Karo Parisyan, Manny Gamburyan took a similar journey to fame, after his family moved to the US when he was 10. He also took up judo initially, before beginning a career in MMA in 1999. A ferocious fighter, Gamburyan’s tenacity was so intense that Parisyan nicknamed him “The Pitbull”.
After impressing in a number of promotions, Gamburyan competed in The Ultimate Fighter, where his nickname had to be changed to “Anvil” because there was already a “Pitbull” competing at that level. He secured a UFC contract thanks to his performances there and fought at lightweight, featherweight, and bantamweight over the years. He eventually retired from the UFC in 2016 after a spell in WEC.
Eduard Vartanyan
Born in Yerevan in 1991, Eduard Varatanyan’s family moved to Moscow when he was very young and he has fought exclusively in Russia for the entirety of his career. Like many fighters who go on to become high-profile in MMA, Vartanyan tried his hand at kickboxing before concentrating on his chosen profession.
Known for his wide range of fighting skills and styles, Vartanyan began his MMA career as a middleweight in 2011, but soon moved to welterweight, where he found much more success. He moved to the ACB (now known as the ACA) in 2015 and had planned to fight for western promotions, but was forced to stay in Russia due to the COVID pandemic. He returned to the ACA and has since fought in both the welterweight and lightweight divisions.

Edmen Shahbazyan
Born in Glendale, California, Edmen Shahbazyan comes from an Armenian family and has always shown great pride in his heritage. He followed his older brother into a professional MMA career after wrestling to a high level at high school. Shahbazyan began his pro career in 2017 and showed great promise, winning his first 11 bouts.
During that time, Shahbazyan was invited to compete in the Dana White Contender Series, where he continued that win streak and earned himself a UFC contract. Since then, he has shown much promise in the middleweight division, receiving a number of Performance of the Night awards. His most recent fight was yet another victory in October of last year, suggesting that there is more to come from this proud Armenian fighter.
Gegard Mousasi
Gegard Mousasi is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished fighters of Armenian heritage in MMA history. Born in Iran to an Armenian family and raised in the Netherlands, he has always taken pride in his roots throughout his international career. His nickname, “The Dreamcatcher,” fits a fighter who has consistently shut down the ambitions of elite opponents across multiple eras of the sport.
Mousasi made his name on the global stage before the UFC monopoly on stardom fully took shape. He captured the DREAM Light Heavyweight title and also won gold in Strikeforce, later moving on to compete in the UFC, where he earned several high-profile victories over top contenders. A defining chapter of his career came in Bellator, where he became middleweight champion and further cemented his reputation as one of the most well-rounded and technically skilled fighters of his generation.
Known for his composure, sharp striking, timing, and high fight IQ, Mousasi stood out for his consistency at the elite level. While many fighters rise and fall quickly, he remained a top-tier competitor for years across different organizations and rule sets. For Armenian MMA, he represents a truly global figure — a champion outside the UFC system who still belonged among the world’s best for a sustained period of time.
