The U17 European Freestyle Wrestling Championship came to an end on May 17 in Samokov, Bulgaria. On the final day of the tournament, medals were awarded in five weight categories — up to 45, 51, 60, 71 and 92 kg — after which all winners and medalists of the championship were confirmed.
Team Armenia finished the tournament with three medals. The team’s main achievement was the gold medal won by Suren Ishkhanyan in the 55 kg weight category. Two more bronze medals for Armenia were claimed by Erik Ghazaryan at 45 kg and Avetik Tutkhalyan at 71 kg.
For Armenia, this result can be considered logical. Last year, Armenian wrestlers won four medals but remained without gold. This time there were fewer medals, but the team won a European title.
At the same time, Armenia performed slightly worse in the team standings than a year ago. The Armenian team scored 83 points and finished 6th. For comparison, in 2025 the team was fourth with 107 points.
Russia took first place in the team standings with 163 points. Russian wrestlers won three gold, two silver and two bronze medals. Sergey Karmryan, a wrestler of Armenian origin, became European champion for Russia in the 60 kg weight category, while another Armenian wrestler, Artyom Ananyan, won silver at 71 kg.
Azerbaijani wrestlers also won three gold medals. Representatives of Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and Bulgaria each claimed one gold medal.
