Armenia finished second in the team standings at the U17 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships: tournament recap

The Armenian team successfully completed its campaign at the U17 European Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships, which are taking place in Samokov, Bulgaria.
The Greco-Roman wrestling tournament ended on May 13. After all the finals, Armenia finished second in the overall team standings with 145 points. This is 10 points more than Armenia scored at last year’s European Championships.
Russia took first place with 170 points. Azerbaijan completed the top three with 118 points.
Seven medals for Team Armenia
Armenian wrestlers won 7 medals at the tournament: 2 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze. That is two medals more than last year.
The U17 European champions for Armenia were Dzhanes Nazaryan in the 71 kg weight category and Vahe Oveyan in the 80 kg division.
Nazaryan produced a dominant tournament and finished it without giving up a single point to his opponents. In the final, the Armenian wrestler defeated Georgia’s Ramaz Basilia 4-0.
Vahe Oveyan also became one of the main heroes of the Armenian team. In the 80 kg final, he earned an early 8-0 victory over Hungary’s Dominik Zsilagyi and brought Armenia its first gold medal of the tournament.
Silver medals were won by Zaven Mezhlumyan at 65 kg and Aleksan Shaldzhyan at 92 kg. The bronze medalists were Vazgen Vardanyan at 45 kg, Ararat Avetisyan at 48 kg and Gegham Yeghiazaryan at 55 kg.

Also for Team Armenia, Narek Aleyan finished 7th in the 51 kg weight category, Koryun Avetisyan placed 10th at 110 kg, and Samvel Tonoyan ended the tournament in 11th place at 60 kg.

Russia won the team standings with 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. Armenia became the second-best team of the tournament and confirmed the high level of its youth Greco-Roman wrestling school.
