On October 9, in the Norwegian city of Førde, the eighth competition day of the 2025 World Weightlifting Championships took place. Medals were contested in two weight categories — men’s 94 kg and women’s 86 kg.
In both categories, the expected favorites — the Olympic champions of the 2024 Games — claimed victory: Bulgaria’s Karlos Nasar (94 kg) and Norway’s Solfrid Koanda (86 kg).
However, their success did not come easily. Supported by the home crowd, Koanda was visibly nervous and lost the snatch to Yudelina Mejia of the Dominican Republic by 2 kg. But in the clean and jerk, the Norwegian lifted with confidence and overturned the situation, winning the total by just 1 kg.
21-year-old Nasar also started with a setback — he placed only fourth in the snatch, trailing Iran’s Alireza Moeini by 9 kg, who set a world record. But in the clean and jerk, the Bulgarian outlifted his rival by 13 kg and surpassed him by 4 kg in the total. A major surprise came from Colombia’s Josker Albornoz, who claimed bronze despite competing in group B.
In the same weight class, 34-year-old Kianoush Rostami, the 2016 Olympic champion now representing Kosovo, finished in fifth place.
