Armenian clubs’ European opponents played league matches ahead of decisive games

Ahead of the second-leg matches of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds, the opponents of Armenian clubs played league fixtures in their national championships. Unlike them, Armenian Premier League clubs enjoyed full rest and preparation time—the new season in Armenia starts only on August 1. This could be an important advantage in the crucial European fixtures.

Ferencváros (Hungary) – Noah (Armenia) | Champions League, Second Round
Second leg: July 30, Budapest
First leg: Ferencváros win 2:1

On July 26, the Hungarian champions kicked off their national league campaign with a derby against MTK. The match ended in a 1:1 draw, with Leny Joseph scoring the only goal for Ferencváros.

Head coach Robbie Keane made two changes compared to the match in Yerevan. In central defense, Gábor Szalai replaced Stefan Gartenmann, who had scored an own goal against Noah, and he will likely replace the suspended Cissé in the second leg. In midfield, Habib Maïga started while Naby Keïta began on the bench but came on in the 62nd minute.

The rest of the lineup remained unchanged. Armenia international Edgar Sevikyan came on late in the game. It was a tough match for Ferencváros, who failed to start the season with a win.

Győr (Hungary) – Pyunik (Armenia) | Conference League, Second Round
Second leg: July 31, Győr
First leg: Pyunik win 2:1

On July 27, Győr played a league match against Paksi and drew 3:3. The goals came from Dejan Boldor, Samsiddine Ouro, and Nfansu Njie. Raymund Tóth was sent off in the 70th minute.

Head coach Balázs Barczi made four changes to the starting XI compared to the match in Yerevan. Team captain Paul Anton stayed on the bench, while Tóth, Zeljko Gavric, and Alexander Abrahamsen only came on after the break. Nfansu Njie, László Wingler, Barnabás Bíró, and Dejan Boldor started the match.

Universitatea Cluj (Romania) – Ararat-Armenia (Armenia) | Conference League, Second Round
Second leg: July 31, Cluj
First leg: 0:0 draw

On July 28, Universitatea Cluj faced Universitatea Craiova in the third round of the Romanian league and lost 1:2. Miguel Silva scored the team’s only goal.

Head coach Ioan Sabău made five changes to the starting lineup compared to the match in Yerevan. The defensive line remained the same, while in attack, newcomer Jovo Lukic replaced Mamadou Thiam. In midfield, Andrei Fabry, Muhamadu Drame, and Alessandro Murgia replaced Dan Nistor, Gabriel Simion, and Andrei Artean. There was also a goalkeeper change: Stefan Lefter replaced Edvinas Gertmonas.

A separate concern for Universitatea Cluj is its defensive line—three central defenders are injured. Against Craiova, midfielder Dorin Codrea had to play in central defense, and after the break, another midfielder, Andrei Artean, was moved to that position.

Do Armenian clubs have the advantage before the second legs?
While the opponents of Armenian clubs are expending energy in league matches, Noah, Pyunik, and Ararat-Armenia have had the chance to fully focus on their European preparations. Freshness and extra training time could be decisive in the matches on July 30–31.

However, this approach also has a downside—lack of match sharpness and fewer official games. While physical condition can be maintained in training, team cohesion requires competitive matches. For Noah and Pyunik, this is less critical as they have already played three European fixtures each.

Ararat-Armenia, however, only started in the second qualifying round and has played just one official match in the new season. Nevertheless, the first match against Universitatea Cluj showed that Manuel Tulipa’s team is in good shape and capable of putting up a strong fight in the return leg.
