Armenian grandmaster Shant Sargsyan claimed a major victory at the 2026 World Rapid Team Championship.
In the seventh round of the tournament, held in Hong Kong, the member of the Armenian men’s national chess team defeated Magnus Carlsen — a five-time world champion and one of the strongest chess players of the modern era.
The Armenian Chess Federation reported Sargsyan’s victory.
“In the seventh round of the 2026 World Rapid Team Championship, taking place in Hong Kong, Armenian grandmaster Shant Sargsyan defeated Magnus Carlsen, the highest-rated chess player in the world,” the federation said in a statement.
This victory became one of the brightest results of the round for Armenian chess players at the world team championship.
