The World Blitz Chess Championship has kicked off in Doha, the capital of Qatar, and already delivered a major sensation in the very first round. One of the most experienced grandmasters of the tournament, Levon Aronian, suffered a surprising defeat at the hands of 12-year-old chess prodigy Faustino Oro.
Aronian, who led the Armenian national team for many years and now represents the United States, played with the white pieces but failed to convert his advantage. During the game, he made several inaccuracies, which the young international master confidently exploited. The battle lasted until move 68, after which the 42-year-old grandmaster was forced to concede defeat.
In the current FIDE rankings, Aronian holds 20th place, but the tournament has started poorly for him: after four games, he has scored 2.5 points and is only in 82nd position. Faustino Oro has the same number of points and sits in 72nd place, continuing to amaze the chess world with his mature and composed play.
The World Blitz Championship began on December 29 in Doha and will conclude on December 30.
