Armenian wrestler Samvel Terteryan has won the gold medal at the U20 World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships, becoming the champion in the 77 kg weight category.
In the final, Terteryan faced Azerbaijan’s Javidan Nahmatov. The closely contested bout ended 1-1, with the Armenian wrestler taking the victory on criteria.
With this success, Samvel Terteryan completed a golden double in 2026, becoming both the U20 European and World champion.
Terteryan defeats Nahmatov again in a final
Notably, Terteryan and Nahmatov had already faced each other in the final of a major tournament earlier this year. In the U20 European Championship final, the Armenian wrestler secured a convincing 4-0 victory.
The two rivals met again in the World Championship final. This time the bout was much tighter, but Terteryan once again emerged victorious.
On his way to the final, Samvel displayed outstanding form. In his first four bouts at the World Championships, he did not concede a single technical point.
The Armenian defeated Egypt’s Mohamed Ibrahim 8-0, American wrestler Leister Bowling 6-0, Hungary’s Zalan Toplak 5-0, and then beat Georgia’s Giorgi Gogelashvili 6-0 in the semifinal.
Terteryan brothers become U20 world champions in consecutive years
Samvel’s triumph is even more notable because of his family’s recent success. Last year, his brother Gaspar Terteryan became U20 world champion, and now Samvel has repeated the achievement by winning world gold himself.
The Terteryan brothers have therefore become U20 world champions in consecutive years, continuing the strong traditions of Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling school.
