Ahead of Armenia’s upcoming match against Georgia, scheduled for March 20 in Yerevan, the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) has made an important announcement regarding the status of the country’s main stadium.
FFA Warns of Possible Disqualification
“The only stadium in Armenia that meets UEFA’s highest international standards, the Vazgen Sargsyan Republican Stadium, is under special monitoring by UEFA due to the behavior of certain groups of fans during the UEFA Nations League match between Armenia and the Faroe Islands.
According to UEFA’s conclusions, if a similar incident occurs again, the Republican Stadium will be disqualified, meaning that Armenia’s national team and Armenian clubs will not be able to play there. Moreover, this will significantly affect the possibility of hosting the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Armenia (co-hosted with Georgia).”
The FFA also condemned the behavior of certain fan movements, calling it an attempt to harm Armenian football. The statement urges fans to refrain from such actions and to focus solely on supporting the national team and clubs.
Reasons for Possible Disqualification
During the Armenia vs. Faroe Islands match, some fans expressed dissatisfaction with the FFA’s management, demanding the resignation of Football Federation of Armenia President Armen Melikbekyan. Such protests have continued during Armenian Premier League matches.
For instance, on February 28, protests led to the postponement of the match between Ararat and Gandzasar, and on March 1, the Van vs. Alashkert match was halted for 30 minutes. These incidents have drawn UEFA’s close attention, and the organization is closely monitoring the situation in Armenian football.
