Noah or Pyunik: Who Holds the Record for the Best Winning Start in the Armenian Championship?

Noah and Pyunik have become involved in an indirect dispute over the record winning streak at the start of an Armenian championship season. However, a detailed examination of the results shows that both clubs’ claims can be considered valid—it all depends on how the record is calculated.

Noah recently announced that it had set a new national record after winning each of its first eight matches of the season.

In response, Pyunik published a sarcastic post, pointing out that the Yerevan club began the 2002 championship with 14 consecutive victories and that this achievement has still not been surpassed.

A Postponed Match Changed the Chronology

The key detail in this dispute concerns the schedule of the 2002 Armenian championship.

Pyunik lost 1–0 to Shirak in the sixth round. The match was originally scheduled for June 20 but was postponed until October 9. By that point, Pyunik had already played and won 14 other league matches in succession.

Therefore, the record can be calculated in two different ways.

If the official order of the rounds is taken into account, Noah have indeed become the first team in Armenian championship history to win the opening eight rounds. Pyunik’s 2002 season includes a defeat in the sixth round.

However, if the matches are arranged according to the dates on which they were actually played, the record still belongs to Pyunik. The club genuinely recorded 14 consecutive victories before suffering its first on-field defeat of that season.

Both Clubs Are Right in Their Own Way

The statements made by Noah and Pyunik do not necessarily contradict each other. Noah have set the record for the most victories in the opening rounds of an Armenian championship season, while Pyunik hold the record for the longest winning streak from the start of a season based on the chronological order in which the matches were played.

At the same time, the public tone of Pyunik’s response appears unnecessarily harsh. It is quite easy to make a mistake in such a situation, as information about a match postponed more than 20 years ago is difficult to find.

Pyunik could have first shared this clarification directly with Noah’s representatives and then calmly explained the different calculation methods to supporters. Sporting competition between Armenia’s leading clubs benefits the championship, but it should not come at the expense of mutual respect.
