From May 26 to 31, 2025, the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships will take place in Leipzig, Germany. This edition promises to make history with the debut of a new discipline — the Mixed Team Final.
This innovative format was first tested at the European Youth Olympic Festivals and is now officially included in the senior championships. For the first time in a continental competition, men and women will compete together on a single team, representing their country on different apparatuses.
What is the Mixed Team Final?
The Mixed Team Final is a competition involving the strongest gymnasts of a country who have qualified individually. Teams are not chosen by the federation but based on results: those who earned the highest scores on specific apparatuses qualify.
Men’s apparatuses: floor exercise, parallel bars, horizontal bar
Women’s apparatuses: vault, balance beam, floor exercise
Thus, each country’s team includes both male and female gymnasts, forming one united national team.
The final will take place on Wednesday, May 28. The competition format:
-
Round 1: 16 best mixed teams. Each gymnast performs on one apparatus of their choice.
-
Round 2: The top 8 teams advance. Gymnasts perform on a different apparatus.
-
Final round (medal round): 4 teams compete for the podium. Each gymnast uses their last remaining apparatus.
The format requires precise calculation and strategic thinking.
It’s also worth noting that this format will be featured at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
At the 2025 European Championships, Armenia will be represented in the men's competition. The national team includes:
-
Artur Davtyan
-
Vaagn Davtyan
-
Artur Avetisyan
-
Hamlet Manukyan
-
Mamikon Khachatryan
-
Gagik Khachikyan
Particular attention will be on Artur Davtyan, World and European Champion, who remains the team’s leader and top medal hopeful, and on 17-year-old Hamlet Manukyan, who has already made a name for himself in World Cup events, winning three gold medals.
