Russian tennis player of Armenian descent Karen Khachanov (ATP No. 27) claimed a hard-fought victory over Britain's Arthur Fery (ATP No. 37) in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai.
The match, played on October 9, lasted 3 hours and 33 minutes and ended with Khachanov winning in three sets, 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-2).
The contest was exceptionally tense, with all three sets decided by tiebreaks.
Khachanov took the opening set by winning the tiebreak 8-6, but the British player fought back in the second set, leveling the match with a 7-5 tiebreak victory.
The deciding set was equally competitive, with both players once again reaching a tiebreak. This time, Khachanov dominated the final stages, winning 7-2 to secure his place in the next round.
In the Round of 32, the 30-year-old Khachanov will face experienced Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, who turned 38 in June.
Their head-to-head record favors Khachanov. Karen has won his last five meetings against the Frenchman, including their encounter at the 2025 Australian Open, where he secured a straight-sets victory, 7-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Khachanov's only defeat to Mannarino came back in 2015 at an ATP Challenger tournament.
The ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai is being held from October 7 to 18 on outdoor hard courts.
