Denis Djorkaeff, a French public figure of Armenian descent and the older brother of 1998 FIFA World Cup winner Youri Djorkaeff, could become the next president of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) following the upcoming December elections. This was reported by Hraparak.
According to the newspaper, Djorkaeff is being considered as a possible replacement for current FFA president Armen Melikbekyan, who announced back in June that he would not seek re-election.
There has been no official confirmation of Denis Djorkaeff's candidacy so far. Nevertheless, his potential appointment has attracted interest, as he is a figure with international connections and management experience, but without extensive experience in leading Armenian football.
Who Is Denis Djorkaeff?
Denis Djorkaeff is primarily known for his public, diplomatic and administrative activities in France.
Unlike his famous brother Youri, he did not have a major professional football career. However, he has maintained connections with the football industry for many years.
His main areas of activity include:
-
Honorary Consul of Armenia in France. In November 2021, Djorkaeff was appointed Armenia's Honorary Consul in Nantes. His work focuses on strengthening relations between Armenia and France.
-
Deputy Mayor of Décines-Charpieu. He has held municipal positions since 2014. His current responsibilities include culture, international city partnerships and promoting the city.
-
Links with the Football Federation of Armenia. He previously served as an adviser to the FFA president, meaning he is already familiar with the organization's structure.
-
Cooperation with FeedConstruct. He has served as a brand ambassador for the company, representing it at international events.
-
Experience in the football business. He worked as an agent for his brother Youri Djorkaeff, participated in negotiations and managed the company YD PROMO.
Therefore, Denis has experience in several areas that could prove valuable for the head of a national football federation.
Why Could Djorkaeff Be a Good Candidate?
Denis's greatest strength is his international network, particularly in France and the global football community.
The Djorkaeff family is well known throughout European football. His brother Youri, a 1998 World Cup winner and UEFA Euro 2000 champion, works as a football adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
Such connections could potentially help Armenian football strengthen international cooperation, attract specialists, establish partnerships and implement new projects.
Furthermore, Denis's experience in municipal administration and diplomacy could prove useful when working with government institutions and international organizations.
This is particularly relevant as Armenia prepares to co-host the 2029 FIFA U-20 World Cup with Georgia.
The upcoming tournament will require extensive organizational work, infrastructure development and close cooperation with FIFA. In these areas, Djorkaeff's international experience could be an advantage.
There is also a political and public dimension. A new leader who is not directly associated with the long-standing conflicts within Armenian football could potentially ease tensions between the federation, clubs and supporters.
What Concerns Does Djorkaeff's Candidacy Raise?
Despite these advantages, his potential appointment also raises several concerns.
The main issue is his lack of extensive hands-on experience in Armenian football.
Djorkaeff maintains ties with Armenia and has previously worked with the FFA. However, there is currently no clear evidence that he has an in-depth understanding of all the internal problems facing Armenian football.
These challenges go beyond the national team's results. They include the state of club football, youth academies, infrastructure, refereeing and the development system for young players.
Management experience in France does not automatically guarantee success in a completely different football environment.
Another concern is the language barrier. According to Hraparak, Denis Djorkaeff does not speak Armenian. This could complicate direct communication with representatives of local clubs, coaches and the wider football community.
Another important issue is public scrutiny of the new president's work.
Current FFA president Armen Melikbekyan is well known among Armenian football supporters and regularly faces criticism from the media, clubs and the public.
As a new figure, Djorkaeff could initially benefit from a certain level of public trust. This might allow him to begin his work in a calmer environment. At the same time, it is important that his family's international reputation does not replace clear expectations and accountability for the federation's performance.
Could Djorkaeff Change Armenian Football?
From the perspective of international reputation and preparations for the U-20 World Cup, Denis Djorkaeff appears to be an interesting candidate.
His arrival could potentially create new opportunities for cooperation with foreign partners and temporarily reduce tensions surrounding the FFA leadership.
However, changing the president alone will not solve the problems that have accumulated in Armenian football over the years.
It remains unknown whether Djorkaeff has his own development strategy for Armenian football, whom he would appoint to his management team or which reforms he would prioritize.
The potential success of his leadership would depend on these decisions rather than simply on his international connections.
Overall, Denis Djorkaeff appears to be a promising candidate in terms of diplomacy, management and international networking. However, whether he can implement the reforms Armenian football needs remains an open question.
It should be noted that the elections for the new president of the Football Federation of Armenia and its Executive Committee are scheduled for December 2026.
