The head coach of Russia’s Greco-Roman wrestling team, Gogi Koguashvili, has announced the roster for the 2025 European Wrestling Championship, which will take place in Bratislava, Slovakia, from April 7 to 13.
Two wrestlers of Armenian descent have been included in the Russian national team: Alen Mirzoyan and Artur Sargsyan.
Details of the Armenian Wrestlers in the Russian Team:
-
72 kg — Alen Mirzoyan (28 years old, Sverdlovsk region). Mirzoyan is a two-time U23 European champion but has rarely made it into the main team, often losing to another Armenian wrestler, Narek Ohanian, who competed at the 2024 European Championship and won a bronze medal. In 2025, Mirzoyan secured his place in the team by winning the Kutuzov Memorial. In this weight category, Armenia will be represented by Shant Khachatryan.
-
97 kg — Artur Sargsyan (27 years old, Tver region). Sargsyan is considered one of the top contenders in this weight category and is expected to compete against Artur Aleksanyan. They could have faced off at the 2024 World Championship, but Sargsyan suffered an injury and was forced to withdraw early in the tournament. In 2025, he has already won an international tournament — the first wrestling ranking tournament in Zagreb, where he defeated Abubakar Khaslakhanov from Belarus in the final. Sargsyan is the 2021 U23 World and European champion. In Armenia, he is often called the "Brown Bear" in contrast to "White Bear" Artur Aleksanyan. Fans anticipate their clash in the final stages, but the match-up will only be determined after the draw on April 10.
Another Armenian-origin wrestler, Vaag Margaryan (87 kg), had a chance to make the Russian team. Before the roster was announced, a selection match was held between Milad Alirzaev and Vaag Margaryan, with the winner earning a spot in the European Championship. Alirzaev won 2-0 and was included in the team.
