Armenian tennis player Elina Avanesyan, ranked No. 208 in the WTA standings, has missed out on a place in the final of the WTA 250 tournament in Hamburg.
In the semifinals, Avanesyan lost a tense three-set match to Hungary’s Anna Bondar, the world No. 97.
Avanesyan had two set points on her own serve in the opening set but failed to convert them and eventually lost the tiebreak. In the second set, the Armenian dropped her serve twice but managed to turn the match around and level the contest.
Before the deciding set, Avanesyan took a medical timeout because of a foot injury. Despite the problem, she continued to fight and forced another tiebreak, where Bondar prevailed 7–2.
The match ended 7–6 (7–3), 4–6, 7–6 (7–2) in the Hungarian player’s favor.
Avanesyan recorded four victories during her run in Hamburg. It was her first WTA semifinal appearance in a year and a half.
