A list of Armenian wrestlers for the U17 World Championships in Baku has appeared on the United World Wrestling (UWW) website. It was previously reported that Armenia would not take part in the tournament in the Azerbaijani capital.
Armenian athletes are currently listed only in the freestyle competition:
51 kg: Murad Gharibyan
55 kg: David Baleyan
60 kg: Grisha Gevorgyan
65 kg: Erik Papikyan
71 kg: Varuzhan Aslanyan
80 kg: Vache Aslanyan
The listed squad is highly unusual. None of these wrestlers competed at the U17 European Championships or won the most recent Armenian Championships. They finished second or third at the national tournament.
Therefore, should Armenia participate, it would effectively send a reserve squad to Baku. The country is also represented in only six freestyle weight categories.
No Armenian wrestlers are currently listed in the Greco-Roman competition.
It should be noted, however, that the squad published on the UWW website still requires confirmation. It may only be a preliminary entry list, and the appearance of the wrestlers’ names does not necessarily mean that Armenia will ultimately travel to Baku and participate in the tournament.
The U17 World Championships will begin on July 27 in the Azerbaijani capital.
