The U17 European Wrestling Championships will take place from May 11 to 17 in Samokov, Bulgaria. Team Armenia will compete at the tournament with a full squad: 10 wrestlers in freestyle and 10 in Greco-Roman wrestling.
Last year, Armenia performed very successfully at the U17 European Championships. In Greco-Roman wrestling, the Armenian team finished first in the team standings and won five medals: two gold, two silver and one bronze.
Marat Achemyan became European champion in the 51 kg weight category, while Hayk Manukyan won gold at 60 kg. They will no longer compete at the U17 tournament this year, but Dzhanes Nazaryan will be part of the Armenian squad. Last season, he won silver at the European Championships and later became U17 world champion.
In freestyle wrestling, Armenia won four medals last year — one silver and three bronze — and finished fourth in the team standings. Last year’s bronze medalists Aren Piruzyan and Razmik Voskanyan will also compete at this year’s tournament.
