UEFA accuses FIFA of crossing a red line over Balogun decision

The scandal surrounding Folarin Balogun’s eligibility to play against Belgium in the last 16 of the 2026 World Cup has reached a new level. The Union of European Football Associations issued a strongly worded statement against FIFA and described the decision involving the United States forward as “crossing a red line.”

FIFA had earlier suspended the automatic one-match ban imposed on Balogun after his red card in the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The red card remains in force, but the actual suspension has been deferred for a one-year probationary period. As a result, the USMNT forward was cleared to play against Belgium in the World Cup knockout stage.

UEFA believes the decision contradicts the fundamental principles of football regulations.

“The decision to suspend for a one-year probationary period the automatic one-match ban imposed on Balogun after his sending-off crossed a red line,” the organization said in its statement.

UEFA stressed that the minimum automatic one-match suspension following a red card should not be subject to the discretion of any body and does not require an additional decision to come into effect. According to the European organization, it is especially dangerous to make an exception during an ongoing tournament, when several other players in similar situations had already served their suspensions in accordance with the regulations.

“When the enforcement of rules is no longer guaranteed by those who are obliged to protect them, the integrity of the game and trust in the competition are put at risk,” UEFA said.

The organization also warned that FIFA’s decision creates a dangerous precedent within the current World Cup. Following UEFA’s logic, similar cases would now have to be considered under the same principles, which could damage the competition itself.

The situation became even more controversial after media reports suggested possible political influence on FIFA’s decision. Reuters reported that US President Donald Trump personally asked FIFA president Gianni Infantino to review Balogun’s red card. The Guardian also reported on Trump’s calls to FIFA. FIFA, meanwhile, explained its decision by referring to Article 27 of its disciplinary code, which allows a judicial body to fully or partially suspend the application of a disciplinary measure.

The decision has also caused strong dissatisfaction in Belgium. The Royal Belgian Football Association expressed its surprise and is considering possible further steps. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot also criticized the situation, saying that if the decision was indeed caused by a phone call, it calls into question the basic principles of football and sport.

For FIFA, this episode has become one of the loudest scandals of the 2026 World Cup. The tournament has already seen controversial refereeing and organizational incidents, but in Balogun’s case the issue is not only about the interpretation of an on-field episode — it is about the application of disciplinary regulations.

Against the backdrop of the conflict, media reports have already emerged claiming that European football officials are discussing the possibility of putting forward an alternative candidate for the FIFA presidential election in 2027. Journalist Romain Molina reported that UEFA representatives are working on a candidate who could challenge Gianni Infantino. There has been no official confirmation of this information so far.

Infantino had previously stated his intention to run for re-election. The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in March 2027.

The conflict between FIFA and UEFA had been growing even before this case — including over the expansion of the World Cup and the distribution of slots between confederations. However, the Balogun case has sharply increased the tension. The dispute is now not only about the structure of the tournament, but also about trust in the rules and the independence of football decisions.

UEFA described FIFA’s decision as “unprecedented, inexplicable and unjustified.” That wording best reflects the scale of the crisis: a scandal over one red card has turned into a question of who governs world football — and by what rules.
