Armenia and Russia Set Records — All Semifinalists of the IBA World Boxing Championships 2025 Are Now Known

All semifinalists of the 2025 IBA World Boxing Championships have been determined, and athletes from post-Soviet countries dominate the list with remarkable confidence. Team Russia delivered an unprecedented result: all 13 of its boxers reached the semifinals, ensuring the country’s presence in every weight category. This is a historic achievement for the Russian national team.
Uzbekistan is also performing exceptionally well, sending 9 athletes into the semifinals. They are followed by Kazakhstan (6) and Armenia (5).
For Armenian boxing, this championship is already unique. Throughout history, Armenia has had only 12 medalists at world championships: 1 gold, 2 silver, and 9 bronze medals. Independent Armenia’s only world championship gold dates back to 1993, when Nshan Munchyan became world champion (before that, Israel Hakobkokhyan won a world title as part of the USSR). Never before had the Armenian team won more than two medals at a single world championship.
But at the 2025 World Championships in Dubai, Armenia now has 5 semifinalists — which means at least 5 bronze medals, an absolute national record.
This result will go down in the history of IBA tournaments, which have been held since 1974.
However, it is important to note that many traditionally strong teams did not participate in this championship — including those from Cuba, the USA, Mexico, Italy, Germany, England, Ukraine, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria, Japan, and others. These countries have joined the new international federation World Boxing and competed at the alternative world championship held in September 2025 in Liverpool.
Although Cuba is represented in Dubai, it is competing with a noticeably weakened lineup, without its leading athletes. Among Western European nations, only Spain sent its strongest team — and two Spanish boxers managed to reach the semifinals, adding some diversity to the predominantly post-Soviet field of medal contenders.
On the other hand, this championship stands out for its record-breaking prize money, which gives the results special value and importance for both athletes and national federations:
