Olympic Weightlifting Qualification for LA 2028: Selection System, IWF Ranking, Quotas & Weight Categories

The qualification system for weightlifting at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games has been approved and is built as a multi-stage, strictly regulated process. Selection is based on the world ranking, consistency of results over two years, and full compliance with anti-doping rules.
Qualification for LA 2028 uses a new ranking-based model focused on long-term performance stability. This is not a one-time qualifying standard system — it is a global ranking where the best total results (snatch + clean & jerk) from key international competitions count.
Below is a full breakdown of how Olympic qualification in weightlifting works.
How qualification works
Qualification is centered around the IWF Olympic Qualification Ranking (OQR) of the International Weightlifting Federation.
Core principle:
1 kg in total = 1 ranking point
Each athlete’s ranking is based on five best totals:
-
3 best results from Period 1
-
2 best results from Period 2
If an athlete fails to record at least 3 totals in Period 1 and 2 in Period 2, they are removed from the Olympic ranking.
This makes LA 2028 qualification a system of long-term consistency, not one great performance.

Olympic Quotas in Weightlifting
At 2028 Summer Olympics, 120 weightlifters will compete:
| Type of Place | Men | Women | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main quota | 54 | 54 | 108 |
| Host nation | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| Universality | 3 | 3 | 6 |
| TOTAL | 60 | 60 | 120 |
-
Max 10 athletes per weight category
-
Only 1 athlete per NOC per category
How quotas are allocated
Main selection via IWF Ranking — 96 places
In each Olympic weight category, the Top 8 athletes in OQR earn direct Olympic spots.
Continental Representation — 12 places
If a continent has no athlete in the Top 8 of a category, the best lifter from that continent receives an additional quota to ensure global representation.
Host Nation Quotas — 6 places
The United States is guaranteed 3 men’s and 3 women’s spots, reduced if U.S. lifters qualify through ranking.
Universality Places — 6
Allocated by the IOC Tripartite Commission to nations with limited Olympic presence.

Country Limits
-
Maximum 3 athletes per gender per nation
-
A 4th athlete may be allowed if recognized as Best Lifter of the qualification period
-
Only 1 athlete per nation per weight class
-
If an athlete ranks Top-8 in two categories, the NOC must choose one
Armenia’s Outlook
With the 2027 World Championships held in Armenia, the event becomes crucial for local lifters. In theory, Armenia can qualify up to six athletes (3 men + 3 women), potentially more with Best Lifter status. The country traditionally holds stronger positions in the heavier men’s categories.

What this means for athletes
To qualify for LA 2028, a weightlifter must:
-
Compete in at least 5 qualification events
-
Maintain consistently high totals
-
Stay among world ranking leaders
-
Meet all anti-doping requirements
This system is considered one of the strictest in weightlifting history, where two seasons of consistency matter more than a single championship.
