On May 25, the 2026 European Grappling Championship continued in Yerevan at the Gazprom Armenia Sports Complex. On the second day of the tournament, athletes in the U17 age category took to the mat.
Representatives of five countries took part in the competition: Armenia, Russia, Ukraine, Poland and Greece.
The Armenian national team was represented by a large squad in almost all boys’ weight categories. Armenia also had one representative in the girls’ competition.
At the end of the day, the Armenian team won 10 medals, two of which were gold. However, the performance of the Armenian national team cannot be described as completely successful: one of the gold medals was won in a weight category where only two Armenian athletes competed.
The main success of the day for the Armenian team was the performance of Aram Hovsepyan in the 50 kg weight category. In the fight for the gold medal, the Armenian athlete overcame serious competition, finishing ahead of two representatives of Russia and two compatriots.
In the U17 boys’ team standings, Armenia scored 164 points and finished second. Russia took first place, confidently winning the overall ranking with 190 points and six gold medals among boys. Ukraine finished third with two gold medals.
In the girls’ competition, Russia also took first place in the team standings. The Russian team scored 105 points and won two gold medals. Ukraine finished second, Poland third, while Armenia took fourth place with 12 points.
The European Grappling Championship in Yerevan will continue until May 27. Competitions among U20 athletes will take place on May 26, where a wider field of participants is expected. On May 27, the tournament will conclude with the senior athletes.
