Gevork Diarbian: “It Felt Like a Dream” — Rhode Island Native Makes First-Team Debut for New England Revolution

23-year-old Revolution II midfielder Gevork Diarbian fulfilled a lifelong dream when he made his first-team debut for New England Revolution — and he did it in front of a hometown crowd. Speaking to the club’s official website after the match, Diarbian reflected on the emotional and unforgettable moment.

Born and raised in Cranston, Rhode Island, just 25 miles from Foxborough, Diarbian grew up a passionate Revolution supporter. “Every time we’d drive past the stadium, I’d tell my parents, ‘That’s where I’m going to play one day,’” he shared.

On May 7, that childhood vision became reality. After years in the Revolution Academy, a stint at Providence College, and a strong run with Revolution II, Diarbian finally got the call-up to the first team for a U.S. Open Cup match against Rhode Island FC — right in his home state, with family, friends, and former coaches in attendance.

“When I found out we were playing Rhode Island, I knew it was my moment,” he said. “Making my debut with the first team was a dream come true. To do it at home made it even more special.”

Subbed on in the 87th minute with the game tied 1-1, Diarbian wasted no time making an impact. His left-wing cross clipped the far post and set up teammate Cristiano Oliveira, who buried the game-winner.

“I told myself that no matter how many minutes I got, I was going to make something happen,” Diarbian said. “Even if it was five minutes or just two, I wanted to help the team.”

The goal was particularly special as it was also Oliveira’s debut. “After the match, I was talking to him and honestly, I wanted to cry,” Diarbian admitted. “It was incredible for both of us to step up like that.”

New England head coach Caleb Porter praised Diarbian for his energy and character. “At first, I thought he was kind of a little punk — but in the best way,” Porter laughed. “He’s got that edge, that bite. I love it. That’s what you need in young players — confidence, personality, attitude.”

Diarbian

Beyond his first-team moment, Diarbian has been a key part of Revolution II’s strong start to the 2025 MLS NEXT Pro season. With one goal, one assist, and 16 shots, he’s helped the team rack up 15 points in seven games — a massive improvement from last year’s total of just 22.

“The atmosphere around the team is really good,” he said. “Last season didn’t go our way, but this year feels different. We’re locked in. If we keep working, this could be our year.”

Despite the excitement of his debut, Diarbian remains focused on the bigger picture. “This was just one step. I’ll stay patient, keep putting in the work, and take every opportunity that comes my way.”

For the kid from Cranston who once dreamed of stepping onto the pitch at Gillette Stadium, that dream has begun — and he’s only getting started.
