Arsen Julfalakyan becomes 2026 South American Games champion at 39

Renowned Armenian wrestler, 2012 Olympic silver medallist and world champion Arsen Julfalakyan has won a gold medal at the 2026 South American Games, representing Argentina.

The 39-year-old finished first in the 77kg Greco-Roman wrestling event in Rosario. Julfalakyan competed in four bouts and claimed three victories.

In the group stage, he first defeated Peru’s Ryan Cubas 8–0 before losing 9–4 to Colombia’s Jair Cuero. Representing Argentina, Julfalakyan advanced to the semifinals as the runner-up in his group and secured an early 9–0 victory over Brazil’s Joilson de Brito.

Julfalakyan faced Cuero again in the final and avenged his group-stage defeat. Arsen beat the Colombian 4–2 to earn a gold medal for Argentina. Official UWW results

Argentine wrestler of Armenian descent Pablo Zhamkochyan also competed at the tournament. He finished fourth in the 87kg weight category.

Julfalakyan has represented Argentina internationally since 2023. In 2024, he attempted to qualify for the Paris Olympic Games but failed to secure a quota place. In 2025, the Armenian wrestler won a silver medal at the Pan American Championships.

Arsen Julfalakyan also continues to serve as president of the United World Wrestling Athletes’ Commission. He was re-elected for a second term in 2025 and will remain in office until 2029.

The 2026 South American Games are taking place in Argentina from September 12 to 26. Brazil leads the medal table with 79 gold medals, while Argentina is second with 46 golds.
