Armenia’s national team head coach, Yeghishe Melikyan, has announced that Krasnodar midfielder Eduard Spertsyan has been appointed as the new captain of the squad. The decision comes ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Hungary and Portugal.
Previously, the captain’s armband belonged to Tigran Barseghyan, who was sent off in the match against Ireland and will miss the next three games due to suspension. Before Barseghyan, Varazdat Haroyan served as captain, but he has since retired from the national team.
Spertsyan already has experience taking on captaincy duties. During periods when Haroyan and Barseghyan were absent, he led the team onto the field several times wearing the armband. Overall, he has started four matches as captain and has also assumed the role during matches on multiple occasions. In addition, Spertsyan is the captain of Krasnodar, further highlighting his leadership qualities.
The official appointment solidifies Eduard Spertsyan’s status as one of the key players and leaders of the current Armenian national team, with high expectations placed on him ahead of the upcoming qualifiers.
