Armenia national team captain Tigran Barseghyan has spoken for the first time about the incident that led to his red card in the crucial 2026 World Cup qualifier against Ireland on October 14. Armenia lost 0–1, and the captain’s dismissal had a major impact on the outcome.
Barseghyan was sent off for unsporting behavior after headbutting Ireland midfielder Finn Azaz. FIFA’s disciplinary committee later suspended him for three matches.

In his statement, the player expressed regret:
“In life, and especially in football, there are moments when it’s very hard to make the right decision in a split second. Unfortunately, in my last match I gave in to emotions and made a mistake,” Barseghyan admitted.
“I deeply regret that I won’t be able to take part in the upcoming important matches and help the team. The Armenia national team always fights until the end, and I’m sure my teammates will give their all to achieve victory,” the captain added.
The footballer also thanked the coaching staff, teammates, and fans for their support during a difficult time:
“I thank head coach Yeghishe Melikyan, my teammates, and all Armenian fans for the trust and warmth I feel even in this challenging moment. It gives me great strength. Today I value our team’s unity more than ever — we’ve built a healthy, friendly atmosphere where facing difficulties becomes easier. I’m always with the team, even when I’m temporarily off the pitch.”
