On April 19, the 2026 European Weightlifting Championships kicked off in Batumi, Georgia. On the opening day, medals were awarded in two women’s weight categories — 48 kg and 53 kg.

Gold medals in the total were won by athletes from Italy and Belgium, earning their teams the first championship titles.

In the 53 kg category, 23-year-old Belgian Nina Sterckx claimed a surprise victory, setting a new European record. She lifted 1 kg more than three-time European champion Mihaela Cambei of Romania. Previously, Sterckx had won four medals at continental championships, but this was her first gold.

In the 48 kg category, 24-year-old Italian Giulia Imperio secured a confident victory, becoming a two-time European champion.

Two Armenian athletes competed on the first day in the 53 kg category. Tenzela Grigoryan placed 6th in the total with 179 kg (81+98), while Isabella Yaylyan finished 9th with 175 kg (80+95).
