During its 144th Session on Thursday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unanimously approved the inclusion of boxing in the program of the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Earlier, the IOC Executive Board granted World Boxing temporary status as the international federation responsible for the development of Olympic boxing.
Now, World Boxing will oversee the formation of the qualification pathway and the organization of the tournament at the Games. The organization’s president, Boris van der Vorst, called the decision "historic," emphasizing the importance of preserving Olympic traditions for future generations of boxers.
Previously, World Boxing Secretary-General Gennady Golovkin noted that the sport’s return to the Olympic program preserves a "symbol of hope" for thousands of athletes dreaming of winning under their country’s flag.
There is now a chance that Armenian boxers may participate in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. However, Armenia is not yet listed as a member of World Boxing, which will organize the qualification tournaments. World Boxing includes 84 countries, but Armenia is not among them. The Armenian federation continues to collaborate only with the IBA, whose Olympic license was revoked.
