Gabriel Sargsyan’s win secures Armenia victory over Sweden at Chess Olympiad

Armenia claimed its third consecutive victory at the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026 in Samarkand, defeating Sweden 2.5–1.5 in the third round.

The decisive result came from Gabriel Sargsyan on board three. The Armenian grandmaster, playing with the white pieces, defeated Erik Blomqvist, while the other three games ended in draws.

Armenia therefore maintained a perfect record after three rounds. The team had previously beaten Barbados 4–0 before recording a convincing 3.5–0.5 victory over Scotland.

Armenia will face Argentina in the fourth round.

Armenia women sweep Croatia 4–0

The Armenian women’s team also recorded an impressive victory in the third round, winning all four games to defeat Croatia 4–0.

Lilit Mkrtchian, Mariam Mkrtchyan, Elina Danielian and Susanna Gaboyan all won their respective games.

The Armenian women’s team has also won all three of its opening matches at the Olympiad. Armenia defeated Hong Kong 3.5–0.5 in the first round before beating Singapore in round two.

Armenia will face a major test in round four against Kazakhstan, one of the strongest teams in the women’s competition.
