Armenian fan from Argentina Gago Ananyan appeared at the 2026 World Cup match between Argentina and Austria with the flag of Artsakh.
The flag of the Republic of Artsakh was spotted on June 22 in the stands of the stadium in Dallas, where Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 and secured a place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
After the match, Ananyan spoke to journalists and explained the meaning of the flag. Speaking on A24, the representative of Agrupación Representativa de los Armenios Migrantes en Armenia (ARAMA) said it was “the flag of Artsakh, which is illegally occupied by Azerbaijan.”
According to Gago Ananyan, the appearance of the flag at a World Cup match was a reminder of the fate of Artsakh and the Armenian people.
“At any moment, the Armenian people will return to their historical lands,” Ananyan said.
The Argentina — Austria match became one of the main events of the second round of the group stage. Lionel Messi scored twice and gave Argentina a 2-0 victory.
