On Thursday evening, near Los Angeles, the Mesrobian High School basketball team delivered a crushing victory against Pasadena's Waverly School with a score of 119-25. However, this win was more than just another success in the school’s sports history.
Guard Nick Khatchikian, standing 6'2", made history by scoring 102 of the team's 119 points in just 22 minutes. His remarkable performance broke California’s state record for points scored in a single game. Nick shot with 80% accuracy, making 48 out of 60 attempts, including three successful three-pointers out of six attempts.
The previous record was held by Tigran Grigoryan, who scored 100 points during the 2003-04 season. Interestingly, Grigoryan also played for Mesrobian and now serves as the team’s assistant coach.
But Nick’s individual achievement wasn’t the only highlight of the night. His younger brother, Dylan Khatchikian, set a new record for assists in a single game. During the match, Dylan made 35 assists and also recorded a triple-double with 15 rebounds and 13 steals. The most surprising fact? Dylan didn’t take a single shot, dedicating himself entirely to supporting the team.
Dylan’s 35 assists in 28 minutes broke the previous state record of 31 assists, set by Josh Arruejo of Calvary Baptist in 2019. Additionally, according to the NFHS Record Book, he tied the national record set by Andre Colbert in 1987 in New York.
The Khatchikian brothers not only set new records but also displayed incredible synergy on the court, each committing only two turnovers. This historic evening once again proved that greatness in sports comes in many forms, whether it’s scoring 102 points or making 35 assists.
