Nürnberg defender Styopa Mkrtchyan was unable to feature in the opening round of the 2. Bundesliga due to a muscle injury he suffered during pre-season.
Interestingly, Mkrtchyan had started preparing for the new campaign earlier than the rest of the squad in an effort to be in the best possible shape for the beginning of the season. However, the extra effort ultimately resulted in an injury — as the saying goes, he meant well, but things did not quite go according to plan.
Even without Mkrtchyan, Nürnberg made an emphatic start to the season, beating Dynamo Dresden 3–0. Italian forward Mohamed Zoma was the star of the match, scoring a hat-trick.
Two of Nürnberg’s new signings, Kalogeropoulos and Otto, started together at centre-back.
Mkrtchyan will now focus on his recovery as he waits to make his first appearance of the new season.
