Argentina complete incredible comeback and reach World Cup 2026 quarter-finals

Argentina reached the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a dramatic 3-2 victory over Egypt.
The match started in very difficult fashion for Argentina. Egypt took the lead in the 15th minute through Ibrahim, and Ziko doubled the African side’s advantage in the second half. By the 67th minute, Argentina were trailing 2-0 and were on the brink of elimination.
The situation became even more complicated after Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the first half. However, Argentina produced a stunning comeback in the final stages of the match.
Cristian Romero pulled one back in the 79th minute, before Messi made up for his earlier miss and equalised shortly after — 2-2. For Argentina’s captain, it was his 8th goal of the tournament and his 21st in World Cup history.
The decisive moment came in stoppage time. Enzo Fernandez scored in the 90+2nd minute to complete the comeback and give Argentina a 3-2 win.
Egypt leave the tournament after one of the greatest World Cup campaigns in their history. The team delivered a brilliant performance and came close to a major upset, but could not hold on to their lead late in the match.
In the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup, Argentina will face the winner of Colombia vs Switzerland.
