Alex Margaryan (63 kg) became the third finalist of the Armenian national team at the 2025 U20 World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling. At the tournament in Bulgaria, the 18-year-old Armenian has been performing flawlessly.
Margaryan showcased bright and confident wrestling, making his way to the final. He first scored two early victories against opponents from China and the USA, then in the quarterfinals defeated Iran’s Mohammad Abutalebi in a tense match, 9:5. In the semifinal, Alex faced home favorite Kristian Milenkov and won in just 48 seconds — 8:0.
In the final, Alex Margaryan will face Aitzhan Khalmakhanov (Uzbekistan) — the reigning Asian champion among seniors and 2022 U17 world champion. He currently ranks 10th in the world in the 63 kg category, led by Karen Aslanyan. As part of Uzbekistan’s national team, Khalmakhanov has already competed in two ranking tournaments. In Bulgaria, he defeated wrestlers from Japan and Kazakhstan ahead of time and also beat U20 European champion Igor Punchenko.
Another Armenian wrestler, Erik Ter-Matevosyan (87 kg), will fight tomorrow for the bronze medal through repechage matches, as his opponent Luka Kochalidze reached the final. His rivals will be representatives from Serbia, Ukraine, and Finland.
Meanwhile, Samvel Terteryan (77 kg) dropped out of the medal race.
It should also be noted that today Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg) — Samvel’s brother — will compete in the final.
