Tenerife defeated Leganés in a penalty shootout to claim an unusual trophy — the “Golden Cucumber”.
The annual friendly ended goalless in regulation time, with Tenerife coming out on top in the subsequent penalty shootout.
Grant-Leon Ranos started the match for the visitors and spent 58 minutes on the pitch. The forward also received a yellow card.
The “Golden Cucumber” has been contested since 1980 in a traditional friendly hosted by Leganés. The winning team receives a golden cucumber, while the losing side is awarded a silver one.
The unusual trophy is linked to the history of Leganés, a city known for cucumber farming. This is why the city’s residents and the club’s supporters are known as pepineros, literally meaning “cucumber growers”.
For Tenerife, the match was the final test ahead of the new season. Ranos and his team will play their first official match on August 16, when they face Eibar in La Liga 2.
