A rare and emotional Armenian derby took place at the RCC Boxing Promotions event in Yekaterinburg, where two talented Armenian fighters stepped into the ring — the undefeated Valery Oganisian (9–0) and the experienced Oganes Ustyan (12–2–1). The junior welterweight clash lasted all six rounds and ended with Oganisian winning by majority decision.

Despite the seemingly dramatic situation — two promising fighters of the same nation crossing paths so early in their careers — the bout turned out dynamic, intense, and showcased the character of both athletes.
As expected, Ustyan relied on pressure from the opening seconds, actively closing the distance, but Oganisian confidently accepted the challenge. Fighting as the second number, Valery skillfully used his speed advantage, meeting his opponent with sharp jabs and hooks, preventing Ustyan from imposing his preferred style.

In the first half of the fight, Oganisian looked noticeably cleaner and more accurate. His footwork and timely counterattacks repeatedly disrupted Ustyan’s attempts to trap him. The picture remained largely the same in the second half — Oganes continued pressing but more often ran into counter punches. Only in the final moments did he manage to launch a small offensive, but it was not enough to change the course of the fight.

This victory carries special significance for Oganisyan. The boxer endured extremely difficult years outside the ring: his attempt to relocate to the United States resulted in a year in an immigration prison, followed by another year spent in Mexico, where he had to rebuild his sports career from scratch.
Today’s success is an important step in his return to the big stage.

According to his camp, Valery is also seeking Armenian citizenship and hopes to compete under the Armenian flag in the future.

Oganisian remains undefeated and continues moving forward confidently. The fight against Ustyan became a vivid testament to his resilience, character, and high boxing level.
