On October 3, the United World Wrestling (UWW) issued an official statement emphasizing the strict observance of sportsmanship rules, including the mandatory handshakes between athletes and referees before and after bouts.
The organization noted that in recent international tournaments, there have been several cases where athletes refused to shake hands, which contradicts UWW’s established regulations. The statement stressed that such behavior violates the spirit of respect and the principle of fair play that form the foundation of wrestling as an Olympic sport.
“These actions are not a mere formality but reflect the culture and values of our community. Violating this rule will be regarded as a disciplinary offense and will result in sanctions,” the UWW statement said.
The federation reminded that Articles 25 and 27 of the official rules explicitly require wrestlers to exchange handshakes with each other and the referee at both the beginning and the end of a match. After the bout, wrestlers must also shake hands with the opposing coaches.
UWW emphasized that such traditions are an integral part of sports ethics and must be respected by all participants — from athletes to referees. Future violations of these norms will be treated with particular strictness.
Thus, the federation made it clear that it intends to restore the high standard of sportsmanship and mutual respect that has always characterized wrestling throughout its history.
