In today’s match against Portugal, Armenia’s national team will take the field with a new captain. Following Varazdat Haroyan’s retirement from international football, head coach Yeghishe Melikyan has appointed a new leader.
The coach’s decision came as a surprise: until now, in Haroyan’s absence, the captain’s armband was usually worn by Krasnodar midfielder Eduard Spertsyan. However, from now on, the captain of the national team will be Slovan Bratislava forward Tigran Barseghyan.
The 31-year-old striker is one of the most experienced players in the current squad, with 60 appearances for the national team. Only Kamo Hovhannisyan has more, with 88 matches, but it was Barseghyan who earned the coaching staff’s trust.
Earlier, Yeghishe Melikyan emphasized that the captain’s armband has special significance for conveying emotions and building the team’s atmosphere. According to him, the captain must be a true leader by character.
