The Russian Football Union has begun shaping the concept of a new international tournament in which national teams that failed to qualify for the 2026 World Cup will be able to participate. According to the 365scores portal, citing its page on X, the competition is planned to be held simultaneously with the World Cup.
According to the source, the initiative aims to draw attention to the situation with FIFA sanctions and achieve their subsequent removal. If successful, Russia will regain the right to return to the qualification cycle for the 2030 World Cup. It is worth recalling that the Russian national team has not participated in official competitions since 2022.
The 2026 World Cup will take place from June 11 to July 19 in three countries — the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
It is noted that among the potential participants of the new tournament may be the Armenian national team, which finished the qualifying stage for the 2026 World Cup in fourth place in Group F and failed to advance to the world championship.
