On September 16, the participation of freestyle wrestlers in the World Freestyle Wrestling Championship came to an end, and according to the final results, Russian athletes won 3 out of 10 possible medals — one gold, one silver and one bronze. Compared to previous years, this result is slightly below the average shown by Russian athletes.
The medalists of the tournament:
Zaur Uguev (61 kg) — gold medal
Zaurbek Sidakov (74 kg) — bronze medal
Amanula Gadzhimagomedov (92 kg) — silver medal
All the wrestlers of the team were favorites in their weight categories, but something was not enough for them to win medals at the tournament. An important role was also played by the absence of Abdulrashid Sadulaev, who was not granted a Schengen visa to travel to Croatia.
In the weight category up to 57 kg, Musa Mehdikhanov competed, who took 7th place at the end of the tournament. Musa started the tournament by qualifying, progressed to the 1/4 finals stage and lost to the Olympic medalist Gulomjon Abdullayev, a representative of Uzbekistan.
Zaur Uguyev successfully competed in the weight category up to 61 kg. He confidently walked through his grid and in the final, due to his experience, defeated the young Iranian with a score of 11:2.
The reigning European champion Ibragim Ibragimov competed in the military unit up to 65 kg. He is an experienced and strong wrestler, but in this tournament he did not show what he was capable of. Ibragimov started the tournament from the 1/16 finals and reached the 1/4, where he lost to the reigning Olympic champion Kotaro Kioka. And in the fight for the bronze, he lost to a young wrestler from Uzbekistan Umidjon Jalalov.
Sayin Kazyryk fought in the military unit up to 70 kg. He started the tournament from the 1/16 finals and lost in 1/8 to Hungarian representative Ismail Musukaev with a score of 2:4, who did not reach the finals.
The current vice-champion of Europe, Zaurbek Sidakov, competed in the military unit up to 74 kg. There were a lot of expectations from Zaur, but he showed only half of his capabilities. He started the tournament from the 1/16 finals and reached the semifinals, where he lost to the European champion and Olympic medalist from Albania, Chermen Valiev. In the fight for the bronze, Sidakov defeated American David Carr with a score of 2:2.
Ahmed Usmanov fought in the military unit up to 79 kg. He was one of the favorites of the tournament. In the 1/8 finals, he passed one of the favorites, Georgian Vladimir Gamkrelidze, and in the 1/4 he lost to American Levi Hines. In the consolation bout, Usmanov lost to the representative of Bahrain, Khidir Saipudinov.
Ibragim Kadiev fought in the military unit up to 86 kg. The young wrestler was already one of the favorites at his first World Adult Championship, but, unfortunately, did not meet expectations. He started the tournament by qualifying and reached the 1/4 finals, where he lost to another favorite, Iranian Kamran Ghasempour, who did not reach the finals.
Amanula Gadzhimagomedov competed in the military unit up to 92 kg. Amanula went through a good grid, defeating several favorites such as the representative of Greece Dauren Kurugliev and the Iranian Amirhossein Firouzpurbandpei. He reached the final, but unfortunately lost to American Trent Hidlay with a score of 13:10.
Magomed Kurbanov fought in the military unit up to 97 kg. He started the tournament by qualifying. Magomed reached the 1/4 finals, defeating the representative of Kazakhstan Rizabek Aitmukhan and the representative of North Macedonia Magomedagaji Nurov. But in 1/4 he lost to the reigning Olympic champion Ahmed Tazhudinov, who did not reach the final and left Magomed without a medal.
Abdullah Kurbanov fought in the military unit up to 120 kg. Kurbanov started the tournament with a qualification. He defeated the representatives of the USA and Belarus, but lost to the representative of Bahrain Shamil Sharipov in the 1/4 finals.
