On May 5, in Lima, the capital of Peru, the fifth and penultimate competition day of the IWF-organized Youth and Junior World Weightlifting Championships (U17 & U20) took place. Six sets of medals were contested across both age categories.
Team Armenia added to its medal tally: Harutyun Hovhannisyan claimed silver in the U17 over 102 kg category. Emma Poghosyan (81 kg) also delivered a commendable performance, finishing fourth in the U20 division.
Brazil’s Triumph and a World Record
One of the day’s standout athletes was Matheus Pessanha from Brazil. He won gold in the U20 men’s 102 kg category, setting a new clean & jerk world record of 220 kg. His total of 395 kg (175+220) was the highest of the day and earned him the title of the first-ever male world champion from Brazil in any age group. His record-setting lift capped off a flawless series of six successful attempts.
