The federal appeal committee of the DNCG financial watchdog has overturned its previous decision to relegate Lyon to Ligue 2. As a result, the club will officially retain its Ligue 1 status for the 2025/26 season. At the same time, salary payments and transfer fees will be placed under strict supervision.
Lyon had initially been sanctioned due to multiple violations of financial fair play rules. However, the efforts of the club’s new management and significant financial inflows convinced the commission to reconsider the verdict.
In an official statement, the club said:
“Olympique Lyonnais welcomes the DNCG’s decision to keep the club in Ligue 1. We thank the appeals commission for recognizing the ambitions of the new management team, which is committed to responsible governance.”
“The support of shareholders, creditors, fans, partners, players, and staff played a key role. Today’s decision is the first step toward rebuilding trust in Olympique Lyonnais. We can now fully focus on our sporting goals and preparation for the upcoming season.”
Ahead of the hearing, the club managed to improve its financial situation by raising approximately €54 million from summer sales. The biggest deal was Rayan Cherki’s move to Manchester City for €36.5 million. Saïd Benrahma was sold to Saudi Arabia’s NEOM for €12 million, Amin Sarr to Verona for €3.5 million, and Johann Lepenant to Nantes for €2.5 million.
In addition, the club parted ways with two of its highest-paid players: Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolás Tagliafico left as free agents. Lacazette, like Benrahma, will continue his career in NEOM, while World Cup winner Tagliafico is currently without a club.
Now Lyon can begin the Ligue 1 season with new financial benchmarks and objectives. The club will also participate in the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League.
