Norway became the authors of one of the biggest sensations of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The team claimed a historic 2-1 victory over Brazil in the Round of 16 and reached the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time.
The main hero of the match was Erling Haaland. The striker scored a brilliant double and gave Norway one of the greatest victories in the history of the national team. At the same time, the success was not only about the forward: Norway produced an excellent all-round team performance, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland made several crucial saves.
Brazil managed to respond only late in the match. Neymar converted a penalty, but that goal did not save the five-time world champions from elimination. For Brazil, this was their first Round-of-16 exit at the World Cup since 1990, when they were beaten by Argentina.
After the final whistle, emotional celebrations began at New York New Jersey Stadium. Captain Martin Odegaard handed Haaland the responsibility of starting the team chant with the drum — a symbolic moment after the striker’s double and Norway’s historic progress to the next round.
In the World Cup quarter-finals, Norway will face the winner of the Mexico vs England tie.
