62-year-old Armenian specialist Michel Der Zakarian has been appointed as the new head coach of French club Caen, which is currently in the relegation zone of Ligue 2. His main objective is to keep the team in the division.
His first training session saw 150 fans in attendance, while football experts and Der Zakarian’s former colleagues consider him an excellent choice for a club fighting for survival. “He is an honest, straightforward, and demanding coach who knows how to shake up a team,” noted former Nantes sporting director Xavier Gravelaine.
Der Zakarian has repeatedly proven his efficiency: in 2007, he helped Nantes return to Ligue 1, and at Montpellier, he built a solid defensive structure that delivered consistent results. Now, he faces a similar challenge—strengthening Caen’s defense, which has conceded 35 goals in 23 matches.
Despite the difficult league position, many believe Der Zakarian is the only coach capable of performing a “miracle” and saving the team. Last season, he achieved a similar feat at Montpellier, leading the team on a seven-match unbeaten run. His first test will be on Saturday against Pau.
