Canada and Switzerland close to the playoffs: Group B scenarios before the final round at the 2026 World Cup

The decisive third round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage is about to begin. The first teams in action will be from Group B.
Two matches will be played simultaneously in the final round:
Bosnia and Herzegovina vs Qatar
Switzerland vs Canada
Both games will kick off at 22:00 Moscow time.

The main intrigue in the group is the match between Switzerland and Canada. A draw would be enough for both teams to secure a place in the playoffs. In that case, Canada would finish first thanks to a better goal difference.
For Bosnia and Qatar, the situation is much more complicated. The winner of their head-to-head match will move to four points and keep alive their chances of reaching the playoffs, at least from third place. However, to break into the top two, they need not only a win but also a big scoreline and a favorable result in the other match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina need a heavy win over Qatar and must hope Canada suffer a heavy defeat against Switzerland. Bosnia need to make up a nine-goal gap in goal difference. For example, a 6-0 win for Bosnia and a 3-0 defeat for Canada would bring the teams level on goal difference, after which additional tiebreakers may be needed.
Qatar face a similar task, but in relation to Switzerland. They need a big win over Bosnia and must hope Canada beat Switzerland convincingly. Qatar also need to make up a nine-goal gap in goal difference.
If teams finish level on points, head-to-head results are considered first. Bosnia previously drew with Canada, while Qatar drew with Switzerland. Since those head-to-head matches ended level, goal difference could become the decisive factor in such a scenario.
A draw in Bosnia vs Qatar would practically leave both teams with no chance of continuing in the tournament. But the winner of that match, especially with a big margin, could have strong chances of qualifying for the playoffs from third place.
