The second day of competition at the 2026 World Greco-Roman Wrestling Championships is taking place on October 25 in Astana, Kazakhstan. Four representatives of the Armenian national team took to the mat, but none has yet secured a place in the medal bouts.

Ashot Khachatryan (72 kg) and Hayk Khloyan (97 kg) both opened their campaigns with victories but suffered defeats in the round of 16. Razmik Kurdyan (130 kg) lost his opening bout due to injury, while Suren Aghajanyan (60 kg) was eliminated from the World Championships after losing his repechage match.

Armenian wrestlers' results on Day 2 of the 2026 World Championships

Ashot Khachatryan (72 kg)

In his opening round-of-32 bout, Ashot Khachatryan defeated Moldova's Mihai Petic 8-3.

However, in the next round, the Armenian wrestler faced Ukraine's Parviz Nasibov and suffered a 0-9 defeat, ending his run in the round of 16.

Hayk Khloyan (97 kg)

Hayk Khloyan also made a successful start to his World Championships campaign. In the round of 32, the Armenian wrestler dominated Morocco's Hamza Boumadiene, securing a 10-0 victory by technical superiority.

In the round of 16, Khloyan faced Iran's Mohammad Hadi Saravi. The bout ended in an 8-0 victory for the Iranian wrestler.

Razmik Kurdyan (130 kg)

Razmik Kurdyan endured a disappointing start to the tournament. In the round of 32, the Armenian heavyweight faced experienced Estonian wrestler Heiki Nabi.

The bout ended with Nabi leading 1-0. Kurdyan sustained an injury and was unable to continue competing.

Suren Aghajanyan (60 kg)

Suren Aghajanyan, who had kept his bronze medal hopes alive after the opening day of the World Championships, returned to the mat for a repechage bout.

His opponent was China's Cao Liguo, an Olympic silver medalist.

The contest was closely fought and ended in a 2-2 tie. However, the Chinese wrestler was awarded the victory on criteria.

As a result, Suren Aghajanyan has been eliminated from the 2026 World Championships without winning a medal.

Are there still chances to win bronze?

Despite their round-of-16 defeats, Ashot Khachatryan and Hayk Khloyan still have a theoretical chance of competing for bronze medals through the repechage rounds.

For that to happen, their respective opponents, Parviz Nasibov and Mohammad Hadi Saravi, must reach the finals of their weight categories.

Meanwhile, Razmik Kurdyan's opponent has already lost in the round of 16.

Overall, Armenian wrestlers recorded two victories and four defeats on the second day of the World Championships. The Armenian national team has yet to secure a medal in any of the new weight categories contested on Day 2.
