Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan made a successful start at the WTA 250 tournament being played on hard courts in São Paulo.
In the round of 32, Avanesyan, who is ranked 155th in the WTA standings, faced Argentina’s Julia Riera, the world No. 144.
The Armenian tennis player claimed a straight-sets victory, winning 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the round of 16.
An all-Armenian clash could take place in the next round in São Paulo. Avanesyan’s potential opponent is another representative of Armenia, Alina Charaeva (WTA No. 133).
Charaeva is facing China’s You Xiaodi (WTA No. 207) in her opening-round match. The match was suspended due to rain with the score tied at one set apiece.
The winner of that match will face Avanesyan for a place in the quarterfinals.
