Former French tennis star Benoît Paire, who reached 18th in the world rankings in January 2016, has surprised the sports community with a sudden change of role.
The 35-year-old athlete, known for his eccentricity and unpredictable behavior, has signed a veteran football contract and joined the veteran team of EUGA Ardziv — a club representing the Armenian community in Marseille.
According to La Provence, although Paire is still competing in professional tennis (currently ranked 575th in the ATP rankings), he has already played several matches for his new team. His choice to join EUGA Ardziv is simple: “A friend of mine plays there. They were short on players and asked me to give it a try. I had already played football with them just for fun. I said, ‘OK, let’s go!’ I’ve already played two matches — I really like the atmosphere, it’s very warm and friendly,” Paire told journalists.
His move to EUGA Ardziv will likely draw additional attention to the club and increase interest from fans and media alike.
