Armenian karateka Suren Harutyunyan (75 kg) has earned the opportunity to claim a bronze medal at the 2025 WKF Karate World Championships. In the semifinal, he lost 2:4 to Egypt’s Abdalla Madouh Abdelaziz, but kept his chance to reach the podium. Tomorrow, on November 30, he will face American athlete Scott Thomas in the bronze-medal bout.
On his way to the semifinals, the 21-year-old athlete delivered a confident performance. In the quarterfinals, Harutyunyan defeated Moroccan Sam Hamza with an impressive 6:1 score, securing his place in the medal contention. Earlier, in the round of 16, he overcame Turkish karateka Omer Yukur, and in the group stage he beat representatives of Uzbekistan and Mexico.
In other weight categories, athletes of Armenian descent failed to advance to the semifinals. Yurik Ogannisyan (67 kg) and Eduard Gasparyan (84 kg), representing Russia, as well as Eduard Sagilyan of the United States, ended their campaigns in the quarterfinals.
In the final of the 75 kg category, Egypt’s Abdalla Madouh Abdelaziz will face Ukrainian Andrei Zaplitny.
If Suren Harutyunyan wins tomorrow, it will become Armenia’s first-ever medal at WKF Karate World Championships.
